Fluorescent Bulb Recycling

The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) and its member communities offer residents a recycling program for mercury-containing light bulbs, thermometers, thermostats, and wall switches.  Mercury poses health and environmental risks and mercury-containing products should be recycled whenever possible. Approximately 3-4 milligrams of mercury is contained in the glass tubing of each CFL and more in a 4’ fluorescent light bulb. Old thermometers contain up to 700 milligrams of mercury. As with any household item that contains hazardous materials, these items should be properly handled at the end of their lives. Even though residents are able to dispose of a CFL in the garbage, it is best to take it to a community drop-off to be recycled to protect human health and avoid unsafe releases to the environment.

SWANCC's Reuse and Recycling Directory provides additional options for fluorescent bulb and mercury recycling or Illinois residents may use Household Chemical Waste collection sites provided by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

A limit of 12 bulbs will be accepted from a resident per visit.
