Electronics Recycling/Contractors

In 2012, Illinois adopted legislation that prohibits landfilling of select electronics. Non-tube televisions, monitors, and other electronics can be taken to one of the recyclers below for recycling, and household appliances can be thrown away in the garbage if they cannot be donated for reuse. All other broken/unwanted electronics can be thrown away in the garbage if they cannot be donated for reuse.

SWANCC provides environmentally-responsible recycling programs for end-of-life computers and electronics for residents of its member communities. Com2 Recycling Solutions is SWANCC's recycling contractor for this program.

The following electronics recyclers are not an endorsement by SWANCC, simply a listing of options. It is recommended that you research the downstream recycling practices of any company listed prior to giving them your old electronics.

See Earth 911's article on removing data from electronics.
