Teaching Tools for Loan
SWANCC has several kits available to members to borrow for educational purposes. They are perfect for classroom settings, scout groups, environmental clubs, after school activities, art classes, or display.
Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Display: To help promote Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program, school and community group representatives can borrow a “Shoe Box Display”. Contents include a shoe that is sliced into thirds, sample “fluff” from each layer of the sliced shoe, sample piece of a basketball court and running track surface, and a 10-minute video about Nike’s “Reuse-a-Shoe” program that shows how the shoes are reprocessed to make the different athletic courts and field surfaces.
PETE's Pack: The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) developed an educational kit called PETE's Pack that can be used as an easy, stand-alone display or as a hands-on, interactive presentation. Contents include a binder of information about PET (#1 plastic screw-top bottles), samples of PET bottles (including several preforms - empty cylinders that will be made into new bottles), new PET plastic pellets, recycled PET plastic pellets, recycled PET fiber, a PET flake and a float-sink display and a t-shirt and carpet sample made of recycled PET fiber - all stored in a mini-bin container made from 100% recycled PET plastic. SWANCC has two PETE's Packs available for loan.
Paper-Making Kit: Retired chemistry teacher and papermaker Phyllis Nelson developed two papermaking kits for SWANCC. Each kit includes everything but scraps of construction paper to make recycled paper with a classroom. This hands-on lesson is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience the process of reprocessing. Using scraps of existing paper to make new paper also demonstrates the concept of closed-loop recycling. Use this teaching tool as part of a lesson or as a stand-alone activity.
Sustainable Products Kit: SWANCC offers a kit with over 50 items that are made from recycled or renewable materials. Index cards provide information about what the item is made from. Additionally, SWANCC provides a source list where items can be purchased. All items are housed in a recycled #2 HDPE plastic bin. This "tool" can be used as a stand-alone display in a locked case with glass.
